Write Here, There, And Everywhere

Wow, I haven't posted here in a bit. Well, let's do some catch up.

I have added another site to the places I write for. It's called Blinded by Sound and it's an awesome music site run by Josh Hathaway. You can find a link to my profile in the sidebar.

Well, here's everything I've been up to online since my last post:

Blogcritics

Reviewed Cee-Lo Green's latest album called The Lady Killer

Listed my Favorite Albums of 2010

Checked out a collection of Tweety & Sylvester cartoons on DVD

Reviewed RJD2's first album under his new alter ego The Insane Warrior called We Are The Doorways (a song is embedded below)

Reviewed the latest (and potentially final) Go! Team album called Rolling Blackouts

Blinded by Sound

My inaugural review for this site takes a listen to Daft Punk's score to Tron Legacy

My goal for 2011 is to create more content versus 2010. With three sites to contribute to (Blogcritics, Blinded by Sound, and ThaHipHop), I just might achieve it.

Here's What You've Missed

It's been a while since I've posted here. I haven't quite had the urge to do so but that doesn't mean I haven't done at least a little writing. So, here's the stuff I've done since the last post...

The first review is that of the re-issue of Passion Pit's debut album Manners. It was on my fave albums of 2009 list and the new version adds two bonus tracks. Here's an excerpt from the review which was first published on Blogcritics back in May:

The biggest test of an album is how it holds up over time. My opinions of some albums have changed over time and not necessarily for the better. Fortunately, Manners remains excellent nearly a year after its initial release. The three bonus tracks may not be enough for fans to double-dip but this release is perfect for anyone just discovering the group.

Next up, is a review of Janelle Monae's debut full-length The ArchAndroid. It's a likely shoo-in for one of my favorite albums of 2010. Here's an excerpt from the article which was first published on Blogcritics in June:

Monae tackles a wide variety of styles on this release from R & B/soul to rock, pop, and electronic. While it could have been a disjointed mishmash of an album, instead it's wonderful from start to finish. The ArchAndroid is endlessly creative and marks the official arrival of a unique voice in music.

Then, for a change, a DVD review. This one is of the Tom & Jerry: Deluxe Anniversary Collection. The H-B cartoons are great. Everything else is a little questionable. Here's an excerpt from that review also first published on Blogcritics in June:

To mark the occasion, Warner Bros. has released a new Deluxe Anniversary Collection DVD featuring 30 cartoons that span nearly every aspect of the Tom & Jerry legacy. Animation enthusiasts and collectors who have picked up the Spotlight Collection releases will probably be a bit disappointed. However, if you're a fan who just wants some cat-and-mouse antics at a reasonable price, this set is for you.

Finally, here's my most recent review. It's of The Chemical Brothers newest release Further. Further is not only a departure for the electronic duo...it's their best album in years. Here's an excerpt from that review which was first published on Blogcritics just a couple of days ago:

In a bold move, their new album contains just eight songs and no featured guest stars. Relying only on themselves (and a sparingly used female vocalist), the duo has crafted one of their best albums in years and an experience best enjoyed as a whole.

Well, that gets you up to date on my writing activities. I want to get back to blogging in the near future. I won't make any promises because when it comes to this blog, I usually don't keep them. Instead, I'll ask you to keep watching this space.

Updating

-Yeah, so no full-on Star Trek review. I really wanted to do one but I had trouble with it. It annoys me quite a bit when I can't write the type of review I want to write. I can't bring myself to write something short and post in anywhere other than here. It's basically like if I'm going to post it some place where a lot of people could read it, I want it to be the best thing I can do. The only time I ever write a review even when it isn't the way I want it is when I have to do it (assigned review).

-I want to review the last two CD's I've bought, Divided by Night by The Crystal Method and Blackout! 2 by Method Man and Redman. My early opinion on Divided by Night is that it's kind of meh. My early opinion on Blackout! 2 is that it's quite enjoyable. Of course, the more I listen to these albums, the more that opinion could potentially change.

-Since my review copy never came, I bought the second (and final) season of Freakazoid! recently. I intend to review it. As I watch it, I'm still struck by how much it may have influenced later animated comedies. There was a gag in an episode, for example, that purposely went on for far too long. It was really reminiscent of how some Family Guy gags go on for a lot longer than they should. I can't be sure that the writers of Family Guy watched Freakazoid but it certainly caught my eye.

-I'll probably do an anime thoughts post soon but I will tell you that this season I've watched Cross Game, Eden of The East, 07-Ghost, Hanasakeru Seishounen, K-On, and Sengoku Basara.

I Made It!

I just finished my time on B Sides Concept Album and it was a blast. I was nervous as hell throughout, but it was really cool to talk about music.

Thanks to Josh Hathaway for inviting me on and allowing me to fulfill one of my New Year's Resolutions. I'd love to do it again someday.

For those of you visiting after hearing me, I'm glad you're checking out my blog. I don't post frequently but I try to write decent stuff when I do. I post a bit more frequently over on MOG, so check that out when you can.

Another Blog Resolution Will Soon Be Fulfilled

I made my Blog Resolutions for 2008 a while back. Of the resolutions, the only one I pretty much did was write a greater variety of posts (I posted my first product review on BC Magazine recently). Another one of them was to appear on a podcast. Now, it looks like that will happen.

Fellow Blogcritic Josh Hathaway, who runs the great music blog Confessions Of A Fanboy, has invited me to appear on his show B Sides Concept Album. It's a live internet radio show on BlogTalk Radio and is part of the BC Radio Network.

The show airs Thursday nights at 10 p.m. EST/9 p.m. CST. I will be appearing on the show on February 14, this Thursday, to talk about the Grammys.

If you can't listen to the show at that time, don't worry. The show will be available for download sometime after it airs. In fact, you can go to the show's site and listen to or download previous editions.

I'm half-excited and half-nervous about doing this and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

The Next Series: Late Reviews

This blog has a couple of occasional series already (The Yoko Kanno Reviews, Random Digital Pics) and soon it will get another one. I've decided to introduce the Late Reviews series. Basically, these will be reviews of not-so-new albums, ones that I wasn't able to complete when they were timelier.

Unlike my other reviews, which usually appear on other sites first, these reviews will appear here first. Also, many of these reviews will be exclusive to this blog.

I don't have a timeframe for these reviews to start appearing, but I'm hoping they'll appear within the next couple of weeks.

Also, The Yoko Kanno Reviews series will restart in the coming weeks as I'm planning to review the digital release CM Yoko.

It's been a while getting back to full speed, but it'll happen soon enough.

Introducing Kanno Days (Plus Some Other Stuff)

Ever since I joined in February, I've been enjoying MOG. With that, I've been trying to think of ways to do some exclusive stuff on there. Well, I finally thought of something.

Beginning today, I will be uploading a different Yoko Kanno song every Tuesday and Thursday to my MOG. I'm calling this "Yoko Kanno Days" or "Kanno Days" or something like that. The first edition is now up and it features "Tank!" from Cowboy Bebop.

Lest you think I'm neglecting this place, more reviews and other stuff are on the way. In fact, some of those reviews will be "blog first" in that they will appear here before they appear anywhere else.

Finally, although I don't like to comment on current events that often, my prayers go out to those affected by the terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech University. This is one of those events that makes you realize how trivial things like the Don Imus scandal really are.

Scanning Ahoy!

I finally bought something I've been wanting for a while...an all-in-one scanner, printer, and copier. It's funny how I got myself to finally buy one.

My dad is currently in school to get his Master's degree. Since I was the only one with a printer, he would handwrite his papers and give them to me to type. Usually, he gives me these papers at the last minute and I'm stuck trying to finish typing them for him before I have to go to work. There have been a couple of times when I've actually been late for work because I was finishing them for him.

Last week, he cut it too close and I was not able to finish the paper for him before I had to go to work. My sister and I ended up taking turns in doing the typing duties for that paper so he could e-mail it to his professor.

That spurred me into buying a new printer with the plan of giving my parents my old, still-working printer so that my dad could type and print at least some of his papers himself. So, on Friday, I bought myself that all-in-one and gave my parents my old printer. Everything is hooked up and working.

What does this mean for the blog? Well, just like getting a digital camera led to me sometimes posting pictures, the same is true for scans. I don't know what exactly I'll scan for this blog yet. When I started the first incarnation of Sterfish's Place (back when it was on GeoCities and it was intended as a site for my writing), I wanted to scan the comics I drew and post them. I'm still considering that, although I would have to redraw them because most of my comics are in pencil on notebook paper. I haven't drawn any comics in about a year or two, but I've been meaning to. If I ever scan them, you'll see that I have absolutely no drawing ability but hell, who did that stop?

Anyway, be on the look out for some more potentially fun stuff on this blog in the future.

A New Mog and A Dead Blog

Although I've managed to avoid getting a MySpace, I've decided to join Mog, a sort-of similar site for music lovers. You can check out my newly created Mog, although be warned that I'll be tweaking it over the next few days.

Does this mean the days of music reviews on this blog are over? Not in the slightest. I will still post on my blog as usual. However, expect any future music sharing posts to be on my mog and not this blog.

Also, I have finally decided to officially close my creative writing blog Everyday Author. It's been dormant for nearly two years and I don't see myself adding something anytime soon. Everyday Author will stay up as an archive (which it pretty much is already) but the only new post you see will be the one I am going to put there announcing the closure in more detail.

I will eventually get back to creative writing and if I'm proud of something, I'll share an excerpt here. If I ever get to a point where I have a ton of stuff again, I could even take Everyday Author out of mothballs...maybe.

In the meantime, I think having a Mog could be fun.

Today I Am 26

Happy Birthday to Me! I turn 26 today. I feel older than that...but look younger. So, I guess it evens out.

Sorry about the lack of posts this month. Between work (this is retail's busy season) and a bout of dizziness that lasted nearly two weeks (and still comes when I get really sleepy), I haven't exactly felt like writing anything.

This blog should be back on track after Christmas with reviews of John Legend and Fantasia's albums, my 2007 Grammy Snubs and Shocks, my favorite albums of 2006, and more.

So, to all those who celebrate it...Merry Christmas! And to all those who don't, may you have a great holiday season!

A Hectic Holiday

Thanksgiving didn't just represent our family being thankful for everything we have, it also represented the end of the largest family project in a long time....cleaning up our basement.

You see, for the past couple of years, our basement has been unbelievably junky. Although it had been junky for a while, it got really bad when my mom was laid off and brought a lot of her stuff from work home. For a while, it really looked like a lost cause.

Over the summer, we managed to throw away a lot of stuff. We threw away junk that had been in the house since my parents moved in over 20 years ago. We threw away so much junk that our garbage bill was significantly higher than it should've been. Even after that, we still had a long way to go.

On Thanksgiving, we usually go over to my grandmother's house. My aunt normally cooks a turkey and other food and we eat, laugh, and have a good time. Since a lot of my dad's family lives fairly close to my grandmother's house, he usually goes over to his family's annual gathering to see his relatives.

Before Thanksgiving this year, my aunt told my mom that she didn't feel like cooking this year. After hearing that, my mom decided that Thanksgiving should be held at our house this year. That way, my aunt wouldn't have to cook (plus we wouldn't have to go anywhere). With that announcement, we all realized that the only place we could have a good Thanksgiving was in our basement, the largest room in our house. The planning began.

We did so much over the week or so before Thanksgiving, it's ridiculous. We threw away more junk. We put a lot of the stuff worth keeping in our garage and in our storage rooms. My mom mopped and shined the floor. She and I put primer on the ceiling in the basement to cover up the water stains. All of us helped my mom sort through bags and boxes and plastic containers. My sister came home on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to do her part too.

We spent a ton of money getting ready for this. We bought food, cleaners, rugs, mats, and anything else we needed. Everyone spent out of their own pocket to help out.

The holiday wasn't without its setbacks. For one thing, my aunt decided to cook some food for Thanksgiving anyway for my grandmother since my grandmother did not make the trip out to our house. This, of course, defeated the purpose of my mom offering to do Thanksgiving in the first place. Then, the television in our living room decided to stop working...only three years after we bought it. We took it over to the repair shop hoping that it could be ready before Thanksgiving (it wasn't). We found out just after the holiday that we probably will not be able to get it repaired and we will have to buy a new TV.

Ultimately, though, when the big holiday came and we could eat and spend time with our family in our home for the first time in years, it all seemed worth it.

In addition to the holiday madness, I ended up working on both Thanksgiving and “Black Friday” for the second year in a row. Thanksgiving was a lot busier than you'd expect. Apparently, a 25% off coupon will make people leave their family gatherings and go shopping.

When I worked on “Black Friday” for the first time last year, it wasn't that bad. This year, though, was busier. Our store opened at 5:30 a.m. and I had to be at work at 5:00. When I got to work, there were actually a few cars waiting in the parking lot for the store to open. Considering that our store is somewhat specialized, that was an achievement. After I got in, the store manager announced on the P.A. to everyone that there were customers outside waiting.

Things went pretty smoothly even though we were pretty busy. I helped as many customers as I could and even did a few carryouts despite the fact that I wasn't actually supposed to be doing them on that day. The store manager bought us lunch although it was one with an acquired taste...White Castle. Let me say that I don't think I've ever seen so many slyders in one place at one time. So many were bought that we had a whole Crave Case left untouched the next day.

Yes, it has been a hectic past few days. I pretty much abandoned my NaNoWriMo novel because of everything going on and my reviews and posts ground to a halt. I know I won't finish my NaNoWriMo novel before the end of the month but I'd like to try to finish it. Also, I will get back into the reviewing game soon as I finally do the reviews for Beyonce, Lupe Fiasco, and J. Dilla along with reviews of the new albums by Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Clipse, and Yoko Kanno. My next post after this one will likely be a review of the animated film Happy Feet.

Oh, and I finally know what I'm going to do with Everyday Author. I'll reveal that in the coming weeks.

Busy Yesterday

I am now a T-Mobile customer. Yesterday, after a day of visiting various cell phone companies, I settled upon T-Mobile. They seem to be the only company that lets you get unlimited nights and weekends for less than $49.99 a month. I got a new number and my parents and I decided that they would take my old number and use it with Cingular's cheapie, only-available-over-the-phone plan.

I also sent my 9/11 Mixmania mix to my match yesterday. It took me a while to do this mix and even then, I'm not sure if I'm fully happy with the tracks I put on there. I'm betting money that when I end up reading everyone else's track listings, I'll realize what good tracks I didn't put on mine.

Yesterday was a pretty eventful day since I also shipped my sister's computer back to HP for repairs and sent off the rebate paperwork for said computer. I helped pay for my sister's computer so I think that HP should send me double my rebate back given that it couldn't go a month before messing up.

My review of Pharrell's new album is now up at ThaHipHop.com The version on the site is slightly different from what I posted on my blog and on Blog Critics. In fact, I think it's a little bit better. Thanks to Fivefold for streamlining that review a bit and posting it on his site.

I'm sorry for another one of “these” posts. Somehow, I will have something of substance to post on this blog later today. Although I'm tempted to write my glowing review of The Roots' Game Theory already (it's good, dammit!), I'll probably write something else if I can stop playing with and learning my new phone.

When I Get Off My Lazy...

-I've got four fairly big CDs that I'll be reviewing soon: Idlewild by OutKast, Game Theory by The Roots, B'Day by Beyonce, and Future Sex/Love Sounds by Justin Timberlake. I've never really reviewed anything by Justin or *NSYNC, so that one should be interesting.

-My belated review of Snakes On A Plane is also on the way. Also, more Anime Thoughts too.

-September 11th Mixmania is coming up as well. I will recount what I remember about that day in addition to revealing my mix (which I'm still in the process of creating).

-Finally, check out this piece that appeared in the September 1, 2006 edition of the Christian Science Monitor. Not only is it a great article, it was written by my cousin.
