Music Meme

Well, I got passed along a meme by Jim at Patriside so I guess it's my turn. It's right up my alley since it's a music meme so here we go...

1. What is the total volume of musical files on your computer?

Would you believe only 273 MB? Shocker, I know. But my computer's hard drive isn't that large so I end up burning a lot of my music files to CD. I have at least 20 burned discs of music files.

2. What song are you listening to right now?

"Heat" by Common from his album Like Water For Chocolate. I've been listening to some old Common in anticipation of his new album Be which is coming out on Tuesday (I can't wait!).

3. Last CD I bought?

Deadringer by RJD2.

4. Five songs you listen to a lot and which mean something to you:

1. Timbaland & Magoo feat. Aaliyah & Static-"I Am Music": I love this song but everytime I listen to it, I'm reminded of Aaliyah's death moreso than any song she's been on. The song has only Aaliyah and Static as they sing from the point of view of music. The song was one of the last songs to come out after Aaliyah's death and it always saddened me to realize that the only thing that remains of her is her wonderful music.

2. Gang Starr-"You Know My Steez": This song will forever remind me of high school and the gradual way my tastes in music started to change. It was in high school that my tastes started toward different types of music (I discovered Radiohead in high school) and I turned towards more substantial types of hip-hop as opposed to the same ole' gangsta stuff. This was also the song that got me to like Gang Starr. I had their previous album but I didn't like it that much. However, the album this came from, Moment of Truth, ended up becoming one of my favorite albums.

3. Yoko Kanno-"Tank!" (The Opening Theme Song of Cowboy Bebop): This song helped me realize that the music in anime was sometimes just as good as the shows themselves. I remember seeing the opening of Cowboy Bebop for the first time and thinking just how cool the song and the opening itself was. This song also lead me to become a fan of Yoko Kanno who has also done music for Escaflowne (TV Show and Movie), Earth Girl Arjuna, Wolf's Rain, and Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex among other anime shows and movies.

4. Radiohead-"Airbag": I could've picked any song on OK Computer but I decided to pick this one because it's the opening song. As I mentioned in my comments about "You Know My Steez" that I discovered Radiohead while in high school. After hearing OK Computer, I never listened to music the same way again. Now, I can concentrate and pick out background elements just by simply wearing some headphones. I listen for vocals, the sound of the instruments, the production. I have a greater enjoyment of music in general, whether it be rock or hip-hop.

5. Mary J. Blige-"No More Drama": I think the song title gives it away. This is one of Mary's best songs as she just says what we all want over the strains of the theme to The Young and The Restless. Who doesn't want to yell "No More Drama!" when things get rough?

5. Five people to pass this to:

Let's see. First, I'll pass it to my friend Paul. He's got an interesting taste in music (we both share a love of Yoko Kanno) so that should be fun. Next, let's go with my sister Samone. I doubt she'll take part but I'll give it a try anyway. Then, I think we'll go with The Humanity Critic at Daily Views, Rants, Pop Culture, and News. I can't wait to see what he puts for his five songs. After that is my friend Cliff. I've never seen him ever participate in a meme, quiz, or test of any kind. Maybe he will this time. And lastly Lewis at Lewies Blogs just because.
