Things To Do For Black History Month Day 4

Things To Do For Black History Month Day 4: Explore The Liberal/Conservative Debate From A Black Perspective

In this age of supposed "red states" and "blue states," one can get an interesting take on liberal and conservative ideals through the writings of African-Americans. One of the most prominent and well-known clash of ideals was the one between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. Washington founded The Tuskegee Institute, while DuBois helped found the NAACP. I recommend that you look at Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington and The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois to see their differing philosophies. For a more current look at the differences between black liberals and black conservatives, check out writings by the following authors:

Liberals

  • Michael Eric Dyson

  • Cornel West

  • Rev. Jesse Jackson

Conservatives

  • John McWhorter

  • Alan Keyes

  • Ward Connerly
