End of An Era
On Wednesday, my mom had the final Kindergarten graduation of her career at Children’s World Learning Center. As I mentioned in an earlier post, her center will be closing in August, and in a couple of weeks, my mom won’t be working there at all. She has gotten the summers off the last few years, but this time she’ll really be unemployed. My dad has had several jobs over the years from working at Sears for almost 20 years, to selling electronics, being a stockbroker, doing telemarketing, to his current job, casino surveillance agent. My mom, on the other hand, has been working at Children’s World since 1990, and worked through the change it made to Meritor Academy and the change back to Children’s World. There still is the remote possibility that she may get a job at another center. However, she will still have to basically start over again. My mom is a great teacher, one who parents consistently praise. Even as she often gripes about the stupidity of the parents and kids she works with, I think teaching is really her calling. I think a quote from Wednesday’s Quick Takes column in the Chicago Sun-Times says it best:
There is no job easier than teaching if you don’t care — and no job harder if you do.
