On the last day of 2003...
So, what did I do on the last day of 2003? Apart from helping my dad set up our "new" TV (a 27-inch that we got for very cheap from a TV repair shop) and counting down the new year watching BET's "Notarized: The Top 100 Videos of 2003" with my mom and my sister, I watched one of the most talked about movies of the year...
Gigli.
So, is it as bad as many many critics across the country said it was? No, it's not. But that doesn't mean it's a good movie either. This movie has some problems. Ben Affleck isn't convincing at all as a hitman or even as being tough. The movie is too long and drags at points (especially the ending). But most importantly, it has too much dialogue. Unlike movies like "Pulp Fiction," the dialogue isn't really all that interesting much of the time. The best parts of the film involve the best actors in it--Christopher Walken and Al Pacino. Christopher Walken's scene is weird but funny (especially when he mentions that he wants to go to Marie Callender's for pizza and ice cream). Al Pacino basically sleepwalks through his one scene but is good as well. Ben and Jen together are okay, but you can tell that the writer tried to make sure he didn't make a "Chasing Amy" only with hitmen. I think the critics didn't like Ben and Jen because of all the exposure and hype they got for this movie and let them have it. There are worse movies than "Gigli" that were released in 2003 and certainly even worse films overall. So, if you can stand 2 hours of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez talking about things like "What is the ideal sexual form?" "How the ways you look at your fingernails can determine whether you are more masculine or feminine" and Jennifer Lopez in various forms of tight pants and shorts, then this is your movie.
